Health and Safety Policy Statement for Durham Wellness and Holistic

At Durham Wellness and Holistic, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of health and safety in compliance with Ontario Regulation 136/18: Personal Service Settings under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. This ensures the safety and well-being of our clients, staff, and community by preventing and reducing the risk of infection and disease transmission within our facility. The following outlines our detailed health and safety practices, demonstrating our adherence to the regulations set forth in Ontario Regulation 136/18.

1. Infection Prevention and Control

Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sterilization

  • All reusable equipment and instruments are cleaned thoroughly and sterilized after every use to ensure they are free from microorganisms. This includes the use of:

    • Approved sterilization methods (e.g., autoclaves) that are tested bi-weekly using biological indicators.

    • High-level disinfectants like PREempt CS20 for semi-critical instruments that cannot be sterilized.

  • Single-use items, such as applicators, cotton pads, and waxing sticks, are discarded after each client to prevent cross-contamination.

  • All workstations, chairs, and treatment beds are cleaned and disinfected between clients using approved surface disinfectants.

Hand Hygiene

  • Practitioners wash their hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (minimum 70% alcohol) before and after each client interaction, as required under the regulation.

  • Gloves are worn during procedures and disposed of immediately after use, ensuring no cross-contact occurs.

2. Training and Competency of Staff

  • All operators and staff members at Durham Wellness and Holistic are trained in infection prevention and control practices, including:

    • Proper cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization techniques.

    • Safe handling of equipment and disposal of single-use items.

    • Identification and mitigation of risks associated with personal services.

  • Staff undertake regular health and safety training, as required by public health inspectors or medical officers, to stay updated on regulatory standards.

3. Client Safety and Transparency

Consent and Communication

  • All clients are informed of potential risks associated with the services provided. Consent forms are completed before initiating any service.

  • Detailed records are kept for each client, including any medical conditions, allergies, or sensitivities that may impact the services provided.

Pre-Service Assessment

  • A visual assessment of the client’s skin is conducted before each service to identify any open wounds, rashes, or other contraindications that may pose a risk to health and safety.

  • Services are deferred if any health condition could lead to infection or complications.

4. Facility and Equipment Standards

Work Environment

  • The facility is designed and maintained to ensure cleanliness and safety, including:

    • Non-porous, easily cleanable surfaces for all treatment areas.

    • Separate storage for clean and soiled equipment to prevent cross-contamination.

    • Proper ventilation to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for clients and staff.

Storage and Disposal

  • All products (e.g., wax, creams, lotions) are dispensed in a manner that prevents contamination of the remaining portions. Single-use applicators or pump dispensers are used.

  • Used instruments, sharps, and other waste materials are disposed of in accordance with municipal waste management guidelines for personal service settings.

5. Documentation and Record-Keeping

  • Detailed records are maintained for:

    • Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization cycles, including dates, times, and results of bi-weekly sterilizer tests.

    • Client services and any adverse incidents, which are reported promptly to public health authorities as required.

    • Staff training and certifications related to health and safety.

6. Adherence to Public Health Direction

  • Durham Wellness and Holistic complies fully with any directives or recommendations issued by the Medical Officer of Health or Public Health Inspectors. This includes:

    • Immediate implementation of corrective actions if deficiencies are identified during inspections.

    • Adapting to any new guidelines or requirements aimed at improving infection prevention and control.

7. Emergency Preparedness

  • Procedures are in place to handle emergencies, including exposure to infectious agents or injuries during service delivery.

  • Staff are trained to respond effectively to emergencies and to report incidents to the appropriate authorities as required by regulation.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

At Durham Wellness and Holistic, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of safety and professionalism. We regularly review and update our health and safety protocols to remain compliant with Ontario Regulation 136/18 and any updates to public health standards.
